my grandfather use to be a bootleg minner when he was about my age in high school. it used to be his fathers. then one day they came and striped it. he said the locaton was by the mahanoy city little leage field if u know where thats at . all the coal was for his fathers house and store where he sold itiltian bread.
he still has his carbride lamp from those days.

I know exactly where that is....years ago I used to do a lot of hiking/exploring around Mahanoy City and used to come across quite a bit of Bootleg holes, some were quite well engineered, some were downright dangerous to the point that even in my invinceable days ( stupid days) I wouldn't even considering entry. I wish I had brought a camera
I still like exploring and I live in Pillow, Pa which is smack dab in between the west middle field and the southern field...rumor has is that there were a few bootleg holes here in Pillow...though most of the senior residents who were around at that time went to the Valley View/Good Spring area as it was easier and better coal, and the big coal company didn't seem to care due to the terrain as I've been told......I do know this....Coal is great heat...... :)

Pillow is a cool area as is heebe, rebuck, gratz, rough and ready, there the kind of places time thankfully forgot! That is one of the best articles I have seen yet telling how the Bootlegging industry got started. Now somebody needs to write a article on why the modern day bootleggers are freakin criminals in the eyes of the government. Maybe it's because they aren't in the welfare lines looking for a handout or something.

Yeah that is a cool slope....From what I'm told by the old timers, it is up on the mountain east side of Pillow gap somewhere between Pillow and Klingerstown and is all still there..
I will take my camera with me when I go looking for it.
