Here is an interesting video I found on You Tube..

This is a video of the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine tour in Colorado. They use an operating compressed air mine locomotive to power the man cars into the tour and then they send it back auto pilot. Basically the charge it up with compressed air, make a run, charge it again and send it back. Pretty neat.

You've been in there? Pretty neat, how far down do they drop you in the cage? I'd love to hear any insight you have on the mine and the tour. Certainly looks like it could be worthy of the "Second Best" mine tour!

I wasn't aware of anyone still operating any compressed air locomotives, I thought that part was pretty neat too. It sounds like it is chain driven, as I was kind of expecting to hear a steam engine sounding locomotive.

This is one KICK ASS mine tour. You go down 1,000 feet in a 2 cage system. Here is the best part Greg. It is still kinda a working mine. Everything operates underground. When a miner demonstrates a drill he is actually drilling. After a few days when the tours are closed they will actually blast & mine the gold. At least this was how it operated when I was last there. The air locomotive is wild & everyone gets to meet crapper Jack. They have a few steam hoists underground that they converted to compressed air. They pick up an ore bucket then lift it to the roof. It tilts & drops the ore into an ore car.

There is a web site on line where you can buy an air operated air locomotive

http://www.savonaequip.com/battlocis.asp

You could also buy everything you would need for heavy metal mining i'm not sure if they sell equipment for coal mining

I also saw somewhere on line about an abandoned mine with an air locomotive

Wow, that is a pretty neat discovery to find one untouched in the woods. It looks very much like the one used at this mine tour. Very good find..

I've been wanting to get out there to the Kathleen for years. Sounds like a good time.
