Here's a question for ya. I just ordered a black cap. My last one was white. I was looking at that mine repair company and they're looking for "Black and Red" hats.

When we do airport construction, we get white helmets, as do the engineers and foremen. The equipment operators and laborers and everyone else (the people actually doing the work) wear yellow. Typical in most construction I assume. But what is the signification of colored helmets, and does this vary with region or type of mining (salt/coal/iron etc?)

black- looks badass

and

they all end up black anyways

i think miners wear black hats, and labors are supposed to wear red hats but i dont know about those silly bitty rules. when we started i asked if we needed a special color hat, the operator said..... what color hat do you have? i said.... black, he said..... well youll wear black then...... end of discussion.

I think it varies from region to region and mine to mine. There are no hard rules. But in bitty Chris is correct.

Black is Miners
Red/Orange is New Miners (what that is varies from state to state ) or a visitor.
White is sometimes foremen.

Indiana seems to like Orange and call them Punkin' Heads and you get a Black after 6 months U/G.

yeah, i think how long your a "red hat" or "pumpkin head" is company policy.. i don't know about MSHAs regs for them.. I know at Harmony they have to wear a red hat for a year unless you have / get mining papers.

I dont know that i personally ever seen a miner with a white hat on.... ever..........

That's interesting. Pretty regionalized.

When I fist started here and became Aircraft Crash-Fire-Rescue, I got a helmet out of the box that fit like my boss said. We don't have rank and no one here cared or I think even knew the difference. We had red, white, and yellow. Get one. A white one fit, so I wore it.

My first couple calls were not aircraft related, but actually structures. And one bad car crash just off airport property. The mutual aid fire company members kept calling me "Chief." I was baffled my first few runs until one of their chiefs told me it was because of my helmet. White is chief, the rest wear red, yellow, or black.

We don't have a chief per say, but whoever assumes command from our department is "Chief." So technically they were right, just for the wrong reasons.

I don't recall reading anywhere that MSHA even addresses helmet colors, nor have I heard of the states mandating them. If I was betting I'd go with it's all company or mine policy.

Now what is an Experienced Miner is mandated by MSHA as 12 months U/G experience. But some states increase this, which is allowable.

Thinking about it, Red Hat/ Punkin head may not extend for the full inexperienced period.

And there is certainly no link between mine helmet colors and fire helmet colors.

They are two completely different beast, except in the fact that sometimes colors have meaning.

Mining and other careers requiring a hard hat may not have rules for color but it seems white has always represented supervisor / higher authority. Wait! How come Chris doesn't wear a white cap?

That's easy. Chris is a working leader. His White Helmet would be grunge real quick. Unlike most White Hats.

Beside read His Post again -

this thread has ran like the mammoth since i read it last! ok lets recap.......

chris doesnt wear a white helmet..... well..... basically cause they look gay! dougs post has merit too.

i got a green helmet for my wife and adams girlfriend........ nuf said.......

the blue ones are known only as bressy blue and thats cause thats the only color bressy stocks and bressy is the only place to buy anything in the anthracite.

mine rescue wears white helmets as do the inspectors (see chris' reason for no white helmets)

If i was a real anthracite miner id have a blue helmet but black is what i like!
