I recently bought a Koehler 209 Safety Lamp with three lines on the glass globe. Can anyone tell me what each line represents?

well scott they represent the level of screwedness your in. if your testing for blackdamp and you set the flame to the top line, and it stays there, youre not screwed. if it drops to the middle line, your starting to get screwed. if it hits the bottom line better hold on to your pants cause hes trying to get in scott...... if it goes out, well youre screwed.

now, say your testing for methane. you set the flame to the lower ring and it stays there everything is just fine. if it approaches the next line up.... take a guess...... yep youre about to be screwed. if it reaches the top ring, wow here it comes, and if it gets above that watch out your screwed its gonna blow.......

in all seriousness, i turn globe so the lines are up and set it to the bottom line for testing purposes. usually you use a 1" flame for testing. they are basically a sight to see if your flame is moving. kind of a training glass. as you are more experienced at using a safety lamp you dont need the graduated glass as most are without lines...... with that said, mine has lines and i think only one of us has one without.

what i heard.... is a little simpler method..... keep the flame at the middle line your "walking line" if it rises to the upper line your getting into methane if its dropping to the bottom line then your getting into blackdamp

then you have a good one, you dont have the cheater lines! usually test with a one inch flame. if the lamp is cold, watch as it warms up the flame will grow. you dont want a flame over 1 inch as it will burn the screens.

so if the air is good the flame should stay at one inch, and if the falme is growing above or below one inch then its time to be leaveing quickly?
