Hey all,

Thanks for your posts. Maybe I will leave the exploration until Autumn if it is safer then. I just don't want it to snow and potentially block off any ventilation shafts or whatever.

As far as black damp goes, are there ANY warning signs whatsoever? From what I have gathered, it seems like you can be breathing fine and next second you are writhing on the ground gasping for air. Is this unrealistic? How long does it usually take before you start feeling the effects? I would hate to get in a reasonable distance and be in the black damp the whole time without realising.

Also what danger does methane pose if you don't have any source of ignition? I'd be taking photos down there, I am guessing it would need a bit more than the flash of a camera to set off an explosion. I guess the worst risk would be from kicking a rock and making a spark or something?

To the person who asked about where in NZ coal mining is done, the answer is just about everywhere; there is no real "mining area" to my knowledge. The largest mine I know of is the Rotowaro mine near Huntly (which is open cast). The mine I want to explore is in the far south (Otago) and it has not been worked for a long time.

In terms of safety equipment, are there any electronic devices that do the same thing as a safety lamp?

Also, hello to the fellow Kiwi here! Are you a miner or just interested?

Thermo,

Go to the search function at the top of the page. Seach for "detector".

That should keep you reading for a while.

Electric gas monitor approved for use in underground coal mines: http://www.indsci.com/M40M/
Expensive, yes.... but whats your life worth?

Its a luck of the draw man weather youre going to walk straight into deadly levels of black damp......... it may start gradually, it may not. The problem is you just won't know it if you do walk into extreme levels in a very short distance. Remember you're still breating..... you're body isn't going to act like it would if you were underground sufficating.. You will be sufficating and not know it untill your muscle function shuts down. Keep that it mind!
Gotta pay attention to the gas monitoring ewuipment - whatever it may be.
