The new issue of Flags, Diamonds and Statues (the magazine of the Anthracite Railroads Historical Society) has a very well written and illustrated article on the Lehigh Valley Railroad's huge coal storage facility near Hudsondale, PA (just west of Weatherly).

A huge portion of Broad Mt.'s slope was covered with concrete (and later stone) with pens to hold back the coal. Two planes, one up and one down, brought loaded hoppers to the top to be dumped and then sent back down. It was a gracity operation with the exception of the planes. Chutes at the bottom would be used to load hoppers. The pens stored coal by size, and the author notes even northen field coal was stored there.

Seasonal storage is one topic that doesn't get much ink, so it is good to see this facility covered in detail.

The author notes the walls at the loading area still stand. Might have to make that trek in early winter and see what one can see.
