Mine disaster site remnants removed
Work at Twin Shafts site in Pittston, done by firm that now owns land, upsets some.

In the early morning hours of June 28, 1896, acting Mayor of Pittston M.J. Lanigan was working underground at the Newton Coal Company’s Twin Shafts Mine in Pittston.
Lanigan, also inside superintendent of the mine, had received reports two weeks earlier that wooden supports in the Red Ash vein were “squeezingâ€

I saw the work being done and how it opened up the view into the rail yard. I love trains and thought it was a good idea...I will admit I didn't know that was the site of the twin shafts and that there was still openings. :cry:
