so, when an underground operation shuts down, how is the equipment disposed of? specifically the ventilation fans and motors. and if one were to want some of it where should they start looking, and what might they pay

Most of the time the fans are resold to other mining operations. If the equipment is completely obsolete then 9 out of 10 times it ends up in the scrapyard. We have picked up fans for as low as $275.00.

interesting. i ask because i'm trying to pitch an idea to management at my job about ventilation of the tanks on the ships we're workin' on. the cargo tanks are huge enclosed spaces, and they get awful inside when twenty guys are welding or grinding at the same time. safety say's they don't know where to get a fan that can move enough air to do any good, at least one that doesn't cost more than they want to pay. any ideas where i should look?

You wouldn't want these type of fans. Very large and most require 480 volts. You would be better off trying to get a fan used in confined space rescue and work with the auxlirary tubing.

That's not a huge area at all compared to a mine. Look into fire equipment for that small of a space, get a couple smoke ejectors. They are fans that move lots of air, are portable, not too expensive, and use 120V. Two or three fans should do you just fine, but even one is better than nothing. Smoke ejectors are used to ventilate a smoke-filled structure, normally by negative pressure.
