So did they drag the rail up & down the slope or just hook it up when they reached the top? Of course they would have to hook the rail at the other end if they were going down though.

i dont think it was used to transport rail, i think they just have hooked on there and dug into the ground to keep it from rolling down the grade. the motors didnt drive down the slope they were lowered by the hoist its too steep. but as for this rail hooked to the motor, i think its just a stop.

now looking at it again, i bet they pulled them up the slope with the hoist with that dragging behind, to act as a stop incase the cable broke, or the hoist brake failed. the motors wouldnt fly down the slope then.

Yes the second post you put up is what I was implying. What I was asking when they were hoisted down did they drag that rail back down. When you think about it though they never really brought the locomotives out just mine cars of coal.

yea, thats what i was thinking. but like you said they probably only came out for either major maintenence or when the mines closed...... sometimes not even then, as we know  . also, know how they got them down shafts? they were too long to fit on the elevator cage, so on the bottom of the cage is a large eye hook. they hooked this to the end coulper on the motor and lifted them vertically. then lowered them into the mine where it would be pulled out onto the tracks as it reached the level. nice, i would love to see video of that being done

Well if we find a locomotive in a shaft that is really rare Ohio Vintage recovery team will send the video to you. You never know Chris there will be a day that we will do this but it will be in reverse (removal from the shaft).

It would really be neat to see something that everybody thought would never see the light of day again rolling down the rails under its own power after being yanked out of a shaft.

Well our group has made it halfway there. The Jeffrey locomotive we got came from a drift mine. We got lucky that the power was still there after 30yrs being shut down. We turned the power onto the wire & drove the 1921 locomotive out of the mine.
