The inside of the adit is flooded and inaccessible.

The 19th century ore crusher.

The large steam engine. One of the last to remain intact.

A furnace used presumably to regulate the mine's temperature in later years as a mushroom farm.

The coal was loaded at the bottom as seen here.

A mine researcher determines the gauge to be a puny 24".

The tunnel continues.

The main tunnel meets with this ore chute where ore was removed from a higher level.

Haha "puny 24inch gauge", that's widegauge, says me, been laying real 18" gauge all weekend.
Any chance you guys when doing this sort of thing could actually document the rail size, length of rail, tie spacing, radius of curve if possible.

Chris,
in New Zealand.

Banks, you're right. The tunnel is driven directly through a massive ore body. Rather than drive a puny tunnel into ore, they mined directly from the tunnel. As to why it is consistently wide and tall like a full gauge railroad tunnel even a thousand feet in, I don't know. Certainly there was enough ore available to fund such an ambitious operation.

I heard something about the tunnel leading to Central Park NY.. is this completely bogus or is there actually such a construction?

I think you are thinking of the Croton aqeduct. I know it was navigable for many miles but this was a while ago, not sure of its current status.

Wow, that was really amazing pictures. I have heard about Tahawus mines which are also located at New York. But no buildings are known to remain at the latter community of Tahawus along Sanford Lake, including the mines.

Now its easy to shop

Miner CTMike- The Croaton Aqueduct is so unstable, that they have not inspected it in years because they are afraid that if the stop the water, it will collapse. That is why they are building Tunnel 3.

Hey, Chris (USA), is UGM and AMR (Abandoned Mine Research) going to restore the old crusher? that would make a cool piece of history at your mine, I think! (I think that it would be totally bada-- to put in my front yard after restoring it and getting it to function. great conversation piece!)

nope, no time for that right now. we still have that GE battery locomotive to do someday. although we did save a hudson coal company coal sorting trommel. still has some hudson anthracite in it! that coal was mined in the lackawanna basin of the northern field, shipped by rail to a newyork where this trommel was used. then abandoned. now its at one of our locations in the southern field. that coal made quite the journey. not as wild a journey as the anthracite banks and i distributed in the bahamas once though........ more on that trommel later in its own post.........
