well guys by the skin of our teeth we pulled this off and saved it from the torch. its been less than a week since we found out it was for sale. we tried to buy it but it was already sold, so we contacted the scrapper that bought it. he had plans of cutting it up but we were able to talk him into selling it to us and delivering it as well. this is almost as close as our whitcomb 4 ton motor came to the torch, but that one was closer..... members of abandoned mine research and ohio vintage coal co. teamed up to buy this which we believe was operated by the hudson coal company. hopefully records will prove this once if we can trace them from one of the data plates we pull off of one of the drive motors. the data plate for the locomotive is gone. its incredibly complete with the only thing missing, the lights. the amp hour gauge is there and the glass isnt even broken. the original fuse is intact, and the "key" for the speed control is still there. we will have more pictures coming soon. as of now im storing it for a few months till the ohio boys can come fetch it and take it to their new restoration shop where it will get a full overhaul back to running status. then the plan is to return it back to the northern anthracite field. its been almost 4 years since our last project and we are real happy that we were able to save this one from the scrap heap.

heres some old photos from hudson coal co. showing a few very similar locomotives in action. judging from where this came from, its track gauge and type, we are 95% sure its a hudson coal co. motor. oh and im boys, good job on finally, finally being like the abm forum allowing uploading photos.....

Nice job collaborating and saving an important piece of mining history! It's also a beautiful piece of machinery! I want to know how you talked the guy into selling and delivering it back to you. I look forward to seeing Hudson Coal Co. painted on the side again!

What does the Motor's front look like? I see no less than 10 pics, 9 of which are taken from the arse end. I'm rather interested in the sheild over the headlight and the gong as I will soon be fabricating both for my new Mancha A.

hey kiwi, which way is the front..... thats some topic of debate to a few. in the old picture above, it looks like the operator sits a the front........ the lights are both missing, but i will grab a shot of the "other" end today

My guess would be operator first. But there was some interest in Surface RR's to run long hood forward for safety reasons.

The simple answer is where is the "F" stamped. The FRA has a requirement that Engines be marked to clear up the confusion, don't know if that idea ever go into the mines. There might be an indication on the reverser, hopefully more than an arrow.
