I recently heard that the National Railroad Museum in Green Bay (GO PACK GO!) is undertaking a tremendous task. I heard that they are going to restore their crown jewel (in my opinion), Big Boy 4017 to operating condition. Has anyone heard otherwise?

Restoration would be the easy part as I understand. Those units were so big, there are only certain lines they could run on.

I emailed the museum and found out that there is some truth to what I heard. The locomotive is undergoing cosmetic restoration, and they are adding a sound package to it.

the one at steamtown derailed twice because of curve radius when they pulled it into the yards in the 90s.

yep. I heard that. If anyone could do it, UP could. Hell they've got 3985 and 844. The 3985 is just a smaller Big Boy!

But the difference between the Challengers and Big Boys was enough that 3985 is usable as a restoration. I don't recall precisely where but as I recall the Challengers ran in a very limited area when in service.

They have 3985 running now! the Challengers were used on some passenger trains and some light freight duty, I believe. As of this minute, day, month, and year, Union Pacific No. 3985 is the largest operating steam locomotive in the world.
