I removed this from the other pages. You don't need to post it 3 times. Once is enough.......

Hey Fred,

I agree it would be interesting to compile a list of active mines and mine tours utilizing rail. One place to start would be running through the directory of mine tours listed already at http://www.ironminers.com/mine-tours. A few of them use rail to haul visitors in and out of the mine. The Sago Mine (active coal mine) used rail only for transporting miners and continuous miners for cutting the coal. Although rubber tires are largely preferred over ore cars, there are plenty of reasons to adopt rail haulage if it is given consideration. If you compile such a list, I'll build a section on the site to accommodate it.

I don't understand this the second part of this sentence. Did they used the rail to bring parts into the mine?

Hey Dave,

What I was trying to articulate was that they used rail to transport miners to different parts of the mine. In some press photos you could see tracks leading into a tunnel entrance. However, they used continuous miners (large machines) to cut the coal from the seam rather than the traditional method of blasting coal by hand and filling coal cars on tracks. As far as I know the mine is still idle, but not closed, due to weak coal prices.

OK, I get it. Weak coal prices. Isn't that what stopped Big Muskie from being repaired?

Big Muskie is not a common subject here. :)

As I understand ........

Muskie had more than a few problems, part related to a machine that pushed the engineering too far and part age. I don't think it was terribly reliable during it's service, especially the walking system. I think that was the only one built like that.

The 3270's took the lessons learned from Muskie and were very good machines, just a bit smaller. And a more traditional walking system.

Depends. Do you consider Walking Draglines a threat ? I doubt Pete would be much of one either !

Dear Forum,

I was wondering if anyone can tell me if there are many (or any) underground mines still in operation that employ car tracks or some other type of underground rail system.

Are mining companies still doing this? If not, why not?

Regards,
Fred M. Cain

The Dome mine in Timmins Ontario is a track mine (Iwas employed there),with all the ore/waste movement done by battery locos on rails. This mine is over 100 yrs old,and still mining to this day!

No it is the Dome gold mine, which is owned/operated by Goldcorp, this mine has no internal ramp system,so everything is hauled w/5 ton battery locos. They used to also operate several overhead wire trolley locos, when I worked there. But they do operate scooptrams from 1/2yd. to 5yd.,at least when I worked there. I believe Kirkland Lake Gold, is also a track mine.Other mines in Timmins that use track for mainline haulage (personnel, materials) is Xtrata's Kidd mine, and Goldcorp's Hoyle Pond mine (ore/waste,personnel and materials ). Kidd mine is in Timmins,Ontario as is Dome and Hoyle Pond mines. Kirkland Lake Gold mine is in Kirkland Lake,Ontario. The Big Nickel mine is not an operating mine, but a mine tour,I know as I have been an underground miner for over 37 years.
