"X-DOME",

Thanks for your post and the information. It sounds to me like there are a number of underground mines in Canada still using rail - good news! But I didn't realize that the huge nickel mine near Sudbury was closed nor did I know it was open to tourists! Interesting! Do they have an underground tour with a tram ride?

This mine was featured in "TRAINS" Magazine a few years ago. Evidently they had a lot of underground and surface rail equipment with mixed gauges. I went past the area when I rode VIA Rail across Canada in the late 1980's. I remember seeing the smelter stack and the area right around the smelter looked like a "moonscape".

Regards,
Fred M. Cain

Here's some footage to illustrate the practice of rail haulage in use today. This is also a fitting example of underground placer mining. Unlike most placer mines, they found it more practical to drive tunnels than use backhoes and mine from the surface. Sometimes it is feasible to not only go underground for placer gold but to use locomotives and ore cars on narrow gauge track.

Awesome videos. Does anyone have any info on this mine? In the video of the motor headed out of the mine, it didn't look like the ribs are very well supported considering this is a placer mine.

Hey guys, does anyone know where there is some 8 lb rail to be had? My parent's have a friend who needs some for his 3" scale railroad. (Haven't seen it, but I hear it is nice. He uses it to haul wood for heating his house) The main is 12 lb rail, with the beginning of sidings being the 8 lb stuff, and then the rest of the spurs are 2" C-Channel to save the 8 lb.

Dave,
I answered that on pg 3 of this thread, the only place I ever heard of selling 8lb is in that post and I've been chasing this topic for 10 years.
Would you parent's friend be John O ?

Chris,

Nice to hear from you again! I was afraid you were M.I.A. Can you tell me how I might find more underground mines in North America that still use rail? I actually did find another one in Sierra County, CA. The Ruby Mine. (See my post from a couple of responses back).

Are there any more? I have tried contacting individual mining companies but getting a response back is like pulling hen's teeth.

Friend of a friend kinda thing, you know? The brother of a family friend occasionally operates the SR&CL.

Dave,
I figured it had to be that SR&CL. Roll Models have changed their website somewhat and the Rail button isn't visible so I suggest that you give them a call for pricing and availability. Last time I looked they were selling 8Lb at a discount, maybe they sold out their stock.

Fred,
ha likewise. Can't say I've heard any more in the past couple of years other than those I've already suggested. I've lent more to the "tramway in the backyard" types these past couple of trips as I guess I've had my fill of minecars and exploring mines now. I have nearly finished my orecar, just need to find the time to disassemble, prime the joints and rivet the body back together, the frame now being complete. Winter isn't that far away, I've got some stuff to get done beforehand and finish up rebuilding the turnout at the local park railway.

Fred,
I see that HarmerSteel up in Portland still have the steel ties available for mines.

Chris,

Yes, they do, but how to I find those mines? I want to invest in mining companies using rail is what I'm after.

By the way, awesome track pictures! Thanks for that! Were those taken in New Zealand?

Group,

Is anyone familiar with the Irwin Car Companay? Seems like someone somewhere must still be buying this stuff.

See here: http://www.irwincar.com/irwin-rail-products.php
