depeds, coal mine? o2 detector manditory. flame safety lamp next best thing. but the most important thing........ you know what they say...... if it aint on camera it didnt happen! :D

Essential equipment:

1) Helmet + headlamp
2) Backup lights
3) Camera
4) Communications gear (ham radio / cellphone)
5) 9mm handline (not handgun)
6) Photo ID (hopefully not needed)
7) Tyvek chemical handling suit (or raingear)
8) Good Boots
9) Waterproof notebok and spacepen
10) Maps and information on possible hazards

And the following, though not equipment, are equally essential:

11) Additional mine explorers (someone stays on surface)
12) Common sense (as stated by miner frank)
13) Let someone know where you are

On # 4, one must realize that cell phones aren't going to work just 10 feet inside the mine.

Also, like chris said, if it's a coal mine an air quality detector is essential! A koehler 209 flame safety lamp works excellent, but you must pay attention to it and know how to use it. Black damp is serious.
