I know this might be a stretch, but does anyone have any info on the abandoned Spec iron mine located just outside of Roanoke, VA?

I'm a 5th year architecture student from Virginia Tech and for my thesis would like to design a muesum space highlighting the historical importance of iron mining in the area.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are some pictures I took of the site several years ago.

Welcome to the forum. I did some brief searches for this mine and couldn't find a whole lot about it other than that it exists and it is off of known trail systems. It is a Hematite Iron mine from what I have found.

Do you have any other pictures of the mine? Perhaps a larger size would be helpful.

There is a marked trail in the area named after the mine, but it does not lead to the mine itself. You actually have to do some bushwacking and follow a drainage up to the site from the valley below.

I'll have to look around to find some of the other pics I've taken of the site. I don't think I have much in the way of interior shots of the mine, mostly just the half dozen or so adits that dot the hillside.

The shots you posted are small in resolution which makes a little difficult in examining what is at the mine. Does the mine extend underground and is it accessible? It looks like one shot is a water filled shaft and the other appears like it could be an adit.

yes, and yes. The openings extend horizontally deep into the hillside and are accessible. I've gone into several, and they seem fairly extensive. I'm not too sure if they all connect to one another or not. There are at least a half dozen adits...the one in the bottom photo I posted earlier is found on the opposite side of a small creek that bisects the area. I appears that only the first 30-40ft of this shaft has standing water (about 1ft deep). You can just make out a set of steel tracks coming out of the water on the other side...beyond that, you can see evidence of some timbers that have appeared to have failed.

Very nice. Its always good to see mine rail still present in a mine. It adds a lot of character to the mine when there are some type of artifacts left in it, especially mine rail.
