There is a lot of infrastructure that follows behind this machine. The one I have posted requires track to operate on & is on a larger size than most commonly found in California Gold Mines. That will be an Eimco 12 is what you would be looking for. It requires track & a large high volume air compressor plus mine cars to load with. Eimco also built some track type similar to an excavator. These are not cheap plus the support equipment. If you are looking to dig the audit out can you just bring in a rental mini excavator ? _________________ Pioneering the next INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION (Preservation ! ). . . Pete beat me to it.
But here is a different view.

Just think of a small front-end loader, often on rails. _________________ I don't have all the answers.

There is not a way around that problem. You have to fix the rail before you use one of these or you will just spend all day rerailing it . _________________ Pioneering the next INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION (Preservation ! ). . . Saving equipment (1) mine site at a time. |

Do you have any information on who previously owned the mining claim? Would you be able to contact anyone who had any association with this mine? Perhaps they have information or maps? You also stated that this operation was legendary, was there any printed up history on it? Sometimes local libraries have local history sections which contain information about mines in the area. Perhaps, after a little research, you might be able to come up with mining maps which would pinpoint to where you need to dig.

Without digging you are looking for a needle in a haystack. Is this your claim? _________________ Pioneering the next INDUSTRIAL REVOLUTION (Preservation ! ). . . Saving equipment (1) mine site at a time. |

Who did they sell the claim to? Perhaps they may have more information about the mine. Do you know who reclaimed the site? Also, I wouldn't rule out local history at libraries, they may have information on old mines in the area. They might even have maps or know where to go to get them.
I wouldn't disagree with Pete either, but if you don't have the resources to get the equipment, and you are just looking for a quick dig with a shovel, you are really going to need to do some intelligent research to find the entrance.
