Hey guys, post your gated mines.

Dolph Colliery Dunmore No.2 Bed Drift

Oak Hill Tunnel. Went there on the first middle field trip. Was going to open the doors for everyone to peer inside from outside using our high power spot lights but the doors were damaged from the june 06 flood and we couldn't get in.

The construction of a bat gate on Carbondale Coal Co. Dunmore No. 3 Bed Drift.

Pine Ridge No. 34 Tunnel. We installed the temporary white engraving the opening because, can you believe they didnt even engrave the name of this mine in the concrete opening....... what a waste! Laughing

i will post another pic of this mine with out the white paint, as it was water base and it washed off with the first rain. just need to get back up there and get a shot of it. havent been there since we took this one last year.

Newkirk Tunnel outside Tamaqua. This is one long rock tunnel. 4000 feet until reaching the end of the veins of coal as is on a plaque outside the opening.

B&M Tunnel in Good Springs. This mine is now blasted shut.

Loomis Colliery Manway. Opening is half filled, half gated.

Mine Opening in Dunmore.

Air Shaft near Locust Summit

Coaldale No. 8 Tunnel

South Wilkes-Barre No. 5 Shaft

St Clair Drift, Manway.

after seeing some of these shots Im curious When a mine like these was abandoned and closed off does equipment inside such as locomotives ,mine cars and machinery just get left inside ? Or is it a matter of the cost of removal vs the value of such equipment?

yes, theres alot of equipment still left inside some of these old mines. in most cases the mine just shut down one day without any kind of warning. the mine owner just came in and said, dont come to work tomorrow we are shutting down. pretty bad for the workers, but this left a bunch of items still in old mines. heres some examples from our site:

The big thing with the mines in "anty" country is most equipment was so old it had no resale value. They had unique coal cars & small haulage locomotives that could not be used in the big coal boom in the midwest. The equipment is very cool because it was just built for those mines.

The equipment in our mines in the midwest have equipment in them but most LARGE SCALE mines will move equipment to another mine in their system. As for rail equipment & several cases when a locomotive had past the maintenance life underground they get sealed into old workings. Next to impossible to remove this stuff. We have a lot of G.E. locomotives 50 tonners that are still being used at several mines. These are by far the coolest thing to watch operate. They are almost always used a locomotive at each end for safety reasons. We have the last rail haulage mine operating near us. (2) 50 ton locomotives (Jeffrey) & 40-42 (20) ton cars up a 4% grade. There are places in the mine where the locomo0tives are notched wide open & you can walk faster than the speed of the train.

Of course there is the well known Hibernia Mine that it both gated AND has a concrete barrier...

The mine entrance from a distance revealing the bat gate.

A view of the concrete wall that was installed in 1989 prior to installation of the gate and still exists today.

hmm, is the concrete breached and is that the reason for the gate? i know theres alot of bats in there from what i hear, so they must get in from somewhere?

The concrete wall, erected by the landowner, was breached (the square hole at the top) after the pressure was put on him because he had entombing thousands of bats.
