I am now the proud owner of a Koehler #209 safety lamp. :D

What's the best fuel to burn in it? I've read and heard everything from lighter fluid to lamp oil, but what do folks here use? Also, is there an instruction manual for it somewhere online? A quick google turns up nothing.

It will pretty much burn well with most vaporing fuels, but Coleman's and Naphtha seem to work the best. Coleman's Fuel is made of Naphtha and White Gas and works well in the Koehler flame lamp because it is clean, no octane additives and burns at a low temperature.

One more question..the flint is broken in the igniter assembly and too worn down to strike. I can take out the screw and spring but the flint won't budge in either direction.

Is there a special trick to getting the flint out?

Is there a part number or source for ordering a new flint? I take it the usual flints I'd find at a hardware store, such as for Zippo lighters will be too small.

hmm, never ordered a new one. also they just seem to fall out for me. you can try to use brute force and bust it out but then youll definatly have to find a new one. im not really sure where you would get one...... let me ask around some of my circle.

I got it out in pieces with a little screwdriver. Not sure why it was stuck like that but now it definitely needs replaced ;) I put a Zippo flint in it for now. It will do but doesn't put off enough sparks to light easily, too small of a flint, takes 10-20 strikes to light the wick.

Except for the flint the lamp is in great shape, almost new..

That seems to be the problem with a lot of the safety lamps.... suficient flints ore kinda hard to find. My lamp is one of the only ones of ours that usually lights perfectly. Most of them take a few tries to get the lit. I never had to change my flint.

Mine usually starts the first time. I had the same problem with flint, but Dr. Murley took care of my lamp and now it works like new!

Guys, I never was able to ignite a flame safety. I would love to light one of mine, but since they were never lit, and have original wicks, im going to have to pass. :D :D

I don't think they will be lit in my lifetime:
