Lehman Slope 179
Article by Anthony Wilson

Originally part of Hyde Park Colliery, Lehman 179 Slope was in later years purchased by Moffat Coal Company, owned by John J. Moffat, and managed by Earl Lamb of Scranton. Moffat was a relative newcomer to the anthracite mining industry in the Lackawanna basin. Moffat got its start by purchasing or leasing various Glen Alden coal company tracts in 1942, as mining on a large scale became unprofitable for the larger companies.

In turn Moffat leased or sold properties to smaller independent operators. But Moffat did retain ownership of the profitable end of anthracite production. The breaker was a facility used to break anthracite down into various sizes, and then wash the finished product.
