Sparta Mine

(...continued) The mine appears to have been operated as late as 1881. Later operations included the driving of a second adit with its mouth located approximately 100 feet from the first. No ore was mined from it however.

The mineralogical character of the ore was diverse. Copper ores consisted of chalcopyrite, azurite and malachite. The lead ore minerals included galena, pyromorphite, vanadinite, wulfenite, anglesite. Vauquelinite, a mineral containing both copper and lead, was first discovered in the United States at the Sparta Mine. This mineral contains both copper and lead.
