Hey Deep Miner - I prefer pre 1900 iron mines with a nearly vertical dip and multiple levels underground. Are there any mines near you that were abandoned before 1900 and still have artifacts, tracks or ruins? the best thing I ever found was an 1870s miners pick, that small drill bit you found is really nice. - Connecticut Mike

I'll have to agree with CTMike, and not just because he's a great guy. I also love 19th century mines with a vertical or near-vertical dip. A good example of this type of operation would be the Sunk Mine in NY. :

The Hibernia Mine, in Rockaway Twp. NJ, was very similar to this operation. It was one of the most historically signifigant mines in the state, and was in operation for nearly 150 years. Unfortunately, this mine was destroyed in the 1970's.

i personally like flat pitch coal mines, where access to the workings from gangways is possible. also any mines that have any haulage remains from the 1900s to the 20s. that is when underground haulage was being perfected and many mine cars remain from that era. but any anthracite mine where you can see old technology at work is simply amazing to me. i also enjoy looking at large workings, and small. its pretty impressive seeing 20 foot tall coal seams then to go in another mine where the coal vein is only 18 inches and the workings go for hundreds of feet horizontal. imagining working in that enviroment is absolutly crazy! pitch work is starting to impress me as to the actual labor involved in creating the coal chutes. i really was never into middle and southern field mining techniques but after working at the pioneer tunnel mine tour it has facinated me. heres a few pics of the stuff i like:

That would be an open stope, or pit or trench workings.
